Wykład 1: Managing Software Defects using Goal-Oriented Measurement
Defect-free software systems are a holy grail of software system engineering. Defects cost time, money, reputation, and human lives. A number of strategies have been developed over the recent decades to cope with software defects. The most common way of dealing with defects is testing. Yet, it is neither the most effective nor the most efficient way of addressing the problem of defects. This presentation shows how to optimize software development and quality assurance activities by using goal-oriented measurement.

Wykład 2: Introduction to Software Effort Estimation with Hybrid Methods
Engineering of large and complex software-intensive systems and services in an economical and timely manner is one of the major challenges nowadays. In order to remain competitive, companies must follow engineering principles and apply best practice methods, techniques, and tools. This includes software project management, which, “when poorly performed, can increase costs more rapidly than any other factor”. Effective project management requires reliable effort and schedule estimation support. Project managers need a reliable and convincing basis for developing realistic project plans and for negotiating project conditions with project owners and/or customers. This presentation introduces the subject of software project effort estimation with hybrid methods.

Wykład 3: Hybrid Software Effort Estimation with CoBRA
Effective and efficient effort and further cost estimation for software development companies are immensely important. However, available data are often inconsistent, invalid, or incomplete, so that most of the existing data-intensive estimation methods cannot be applied. There is need to take into account both quantitative information and expert knowledge in a transparent way. CoBRA is a hybrid method combining data- and expert-based approaches and is based on the idea that project costs consist of two basic components: nominal project costs and a cost overhead portion. This presentation will provide the principles of a cost estimation, benchmarking, and risk assessment method CoBRA.

Wykład 4: Empirical Approach in Software Engineering and Beyond
A number of technologies, processes, and methods exist that support the development of complex software systems. Yet, which technology is the most appropriate for solving a particular problem in a specific context? How to develop and transfer a new technology? These questions are addressed by empirical studies. Empiricism provides a transition between blind trail-and-error approaches and the systematic selection, evaluation, and continuous improvement of technologies. This presentation motivates empiricism and introduces the basic principles of empirical studies.

Quality is the key acceptance criterion for any product – a software system in particular. Everybody knows intuitively what quality is, until asked to define it and assess it objectively. Then it becomes clear that “quality is a complex and multi-faceted concept which is the source of great confusion.” This presentation discusses basic challenges of quality modeling and assessment, and proposes example solutions to address these challenges.
