Abstract. This paper introduces a portable declarative format for specifying graphical user interfaces. A generic GUI description is developed in XML and then converted by means of XSLT. Thus the GUI is independent of the platform and the program-ming language. The hope is that in the future, GUIs will be developed by designers versed in graphics but not programming. An implementation for Java and C# is developed.
