Information for visitors

Below are some information and sources for visitors to our institute.

The campus of Poznań University of Technology (PUT) [in Polish: Politechnika Poznańska] is situated on the east bank of Warta river, in the square of Piotrowo, Berdychowo, Jana Pawła II, and Kórnicka streets. The PUT campus is a walking distance from Malta lake and the old town [Stare Miasto].

Here is a map of city center, also in PDF, with location of the PUT campus.

To get to the campus from the airport Poznań-Ławica, the best is to take a cab [taxi]; the journey will take approximately 20 min. during normal traffic conditions (the airport is located in the western outskirts of the city). Alternatively, take a bus to Rondo Kaponiera (with connection to tram line 6). To get to the campus from the train station Poznań Główny, take a tram line 6 from Stop 1 (Most Dworcowy) and get off at Stop 7 (Kórnicka).

The Lecture Hall [in Polish: Centrum Wykładowe] building, where the Institute of Computer Science is located, is situated on the junction of Piotrowo and Berdychowo streets (click on the street names to see an interactive map).

The city of Poznań

Tourist and leisure information

Here is a good City Guide with plenty of useful info and tips.

See also the official City Guide in English (also in German) for:

For a recreational walk near the PUT campus, choose the Malta lake. There are plenty of walking paths around the lake and in the forest. By the lake, you can't miss a large shopping mall - Galeria Malta - with a cinema (to be open in May '09) and fitness club. For directions to the shopping mall, see in the Shopping section. On the opposite side of the lake, there are plans to build Termy Maltańskie, the largest water park in Poland (open not earlier than in 2011).

For an evening stroll, the Stary Rynek area (see aerial view), with numerous pubs and life music, is the primary destination.

Accommodation

Here is a recommended list of Poznań hotels from Trip Advisor (including traveler reviews). For more hotels and budget accommodation, type in "Poznan accommodation" in web search engines.

Transport

The best way to move around in the city center is either on foot or using the tram system. For more remote places, you can take a bus or taxi. The 7-day normal ticket [in Polish: bilet siedmio-dniowy normalny] for trams and buses (valid day & night) costs 26 PLN (Polish złoty), see costs of all tickets here (in Polish).

Tickets can be bought at Rondo Śródka (a large bus station) or in any newspaper shops [in Polish: kiosk]. Directions to Rondo Śródka from Lecture Hall: follow Berdychowo Street towards the lake Malta, turn left into Jana Pawła II, and walk 5-7 min; the bus station will be on your left.

Shopping

Stary Browar on Półwiejska Street is a large shopping mall in the city center, with multiple brand shops, bookstores, electronics, pharmacy (drugstore), travel agencies and a cinema. On the underground floor there is a food store Piotr & Paweł that has a good choice of quality food, including a small section of ingredients used in Japanese and Indian cuisine. On the 2nd floor, there are several cafes and inexpensive food stalls, serving European, American, Arabic and some Chinese cuisine. Directions to Stary Browar: keep walking towards Andersia Tower (the tallest building in the city, made from green glass), Stary Browar is the large red brick building next to it.

Another large shopping mall, Galeria Malta, is just 5 minutes walk from the PUT campus. It is open from 9:00 to 21:00 every day, on Sunday it opens at 10:00 and closes at 20:00. There are around 170 shops, selling mostly brand cloths, jewelery, and electronics. On the ground floor there is also a quality food store Piotr & Paweł and a bookstore. On the top floor there are several inexpensive food stalls, serving mostly fast food but also salads, Chinese-like food, and sushi. There is a nice view on the lake from there. Directions to Galeria Malta from Lecture Hall: keep walking 2 minutes along Berdychowo street to the junction with Jana Pawła II street; you will see the lake on your left and the shopping mall on the right. Cross the street on the lights and continue for around 3 min. The main entrance to the mall will be vis-a-vis the water front.

A vegetable market is on Pl. Wielkopolski, 1 min. walking distance from Stary Rynek (see the Stare Miasto district).

Pharmacy (drugstore) [in Polish: apteka] is across street from the PUT campus, between Kórnicka and Św. Rocha. Another pharmacy is on the ground floor of Galeria Malta (see above).

Eating out

Many restaurants are located in the Old Town [Stare Miasto], either on the Stary Rynek (old market) square or hidden in the narrow streets off the square. Predominantly Polish food is served. It is highly recommended, but if you have special dietary requirements, you may shop around. For example, ask for kosher food in the Cymes restaurant on Woźna (a street off Stary Rynek), try some vegetarian food places, or sample one of the sushi bars. There are also some Chinese restaurants but they are not inexpensive. Note that kebab is not so popular in Poland, and it will be usually made from beef or chicken, not lamb. On the other hand, there are plenty of pizzerias.

Here is a subjective guide to Poznan's restaurants (in Polish); some data given, especially prices, are not up to date.

Money

Larger shops and restaurants accept all major credit cards, but it is advisable to carry some cash. Currency can be exchanged at any larger bank or Bureaux de Change [in Polish: kantor]. There are several banks and kantors in the city center, bounded by 27 Grudnia street to the north, and Św. Marcina street to the south.

Internet for tourists

Information about getting the Internet connection in dormitory rooms on the campus is available from this page (in Polish).
And here is information on how to get wireless access on the campus (in Polish).

Below is about the Internet access in the city, but I don't know how reliable this information is.

There is free wireless access to the Internet in the area of Stary Rynek and Pl. Wolności (see the Stare Miasto district). Here are conditions of use (in Polish).

See a brief intro to using Internet in Poznań for free. Here is a list of hotspots in Poznań. There are also several Internet cafes around in the city.
