Thanks for the contribution scattman, this has obviously been a tough nut to crack for some.

Teh regedit change worked for me... saved me hours and hours of work to get my machine back to rights. I thought I was doing a 'smart' thing be disabling RPC since I was getting firewall alerts once every 30 seconds on a dial-up line. Now I'm back home on my DSL behind my router and feel a tad safer.

Thanks again for the fix on how to restart RPCSS.

Charlie

Great, which one, the CSconfigflags?

Changed the start param to a 2 (from 4) in rpcss and everything is working fine now. Then checked for worm using Symantec and no worm was found. I guess I caused all the problems initially, but thanks to you, I'm back in business.

Hi,

I'm running Windows 2000 and got myself into the same problem. I'm afraid the suggested solutions won't work on W2000 because the start parameter under controlset001 is already 2 and I can't find that CsConfigFlags key under the CurrentControlset.
I did notice a similar CsConfigFlags parameter under Controlset001, 002 and 003.
Any suggestions ?

Thnx !!!

Are they all set to 2 ? You might try setting to 1; I think some folks have done that as well. You will need to reboot afterwards

And are you sure rpcss is not running?

Open a command prompt and enter:

sc query rpcss

What does it show for "state"?

Ah, great. The 1 setting worked then, you're most welcome.
